The agreement between you and Codama when you use Place a Stone.

Updated 13 September 2026

What Place a Stone is

A place to keep a memorial page for someone who has died, or — where the page is about you — to write your own life story while you are alive.

Whoever creates a memorial is its steward. The steward decides what appears on it, who can see it, and who else may help keep it.

What you may not put here

A memorial for a person who is alive, or a death that did not happen. A page about yourself is not a memorial and is marked differently.

A memorial for a public figure created by someone unconnected to them.

Content that is abusive, unlawful, or that invades the privacy of a living person.

A memorial page used for commercial purposes.

You keep ownership of what you upload. You give us only the permission needed to store it, process it and show it to the people you have chosen.

Who a page belongs to

A memorial is kept by its steward. Where someone with a closer family relationship believes it should be theirs, they can file a claim: the page stays up, the current steward is told immediately and has 14 days to respond, and nothing on the page can be deleted or emptied while that runs.

We do not adjudicate family disputes. There is a default order of kinship, a will or an executor appointment overrides it, and where there is no resolution the page is frozen and both sides can download the archive.

Money

Payment is not yet enabled. When it is, a steward plan is a one-time payment rather than a subscription, and the price at the time of purchase is the price.

An unpaid page is never held hostage. The export works regardless.

If we stop

If Place a Stone shuts down we will give at least 90 days’ notice, keep the export working for that whole period, and tell every steward by email. The export is deliberately a plain archive that opens without us — that is the point of it.

The ordinary caveats

The service is provided as it is. We take real care with the things that matter — the archive, the export, the moderation — but we do not promise it will never be unavailable.

Nothing here limits rights you have under consumer law where you live.
